چکیده

VRrnonia amygdoiina is a tropical African plant possibly used by wild chimpanzees fbr medicinal purposes.'} We have previously reported new bitter steroid glucosides, vernonioside Ai-A3, and a related vernonioside Bi from this plant,2'3) As another class of bitter constituents, four known cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones were also isolated,`} The most possible use of this plant by chimpanzeas was suggested to be a medicine against parasiterelated diseases; this idea is based on both the symptoms of the chimpanzee (loss of appetite, lethargy, constipation, dark colored urine, and apparent abdominal discomfort) (M, A. Huflman, personal communication) and local use of the plant by humans.S) Schistosomiasis is one of the most common parasitosis throughout Africa. Here, we exarnined antischistosomal activities of the sesquiterpene lactones (vernodalin, 1; vernolide, 2; hydroxyvernolide, 3; vernodalol, 4), and the steroid glucosides (vernonioside Ai, 5; A2, 6; A3, 7; Bi, 8) including their aglycones (7a, 8a, and 8b) (Fig, 1) using Schistosoma japonicum. Adult pairs of schistosomes (S. J'qponicum) were obtained

In vitro evaluation of secoiridoid glucosides from the fruits of Ligustrum lucidum as antiviral agents.

Six secoiridoid glucosides, lucidumoside C (1), oleoside dimethylester (2), neonuezhenide (3), oleuropein (4), ligustroside (5) and lucidumoside A (6), isolated from the fruits of Ligustrum lucidum (Oleaceae), were examined in vitro for their activities against four strains of pathogenic viruses, namely herpes simplex type I virus (HSV-1), influenza type A virus (Flu A), respiratory syncytial v...

Small intestinal hydrolysis of plant glucosides: higher glucohydrolase activities in rodents than passerine birds.

Glycosides are a major group of plant secondary compounds characterized by one or more sugars conjugated to a lipophilic, possibly toxic aglycone, which is released upon hydrolysis. We compared small intestinal homogenate hydrolysis activity of three rodent and two avian species against four substrates: amygdalin and sinigrin, two plant-derived glucosides, the sugar lactose, whose hydrolysis mo...

Genetic screening identifies cyanogenesis-deficient mutants of Lotus japonicus and reveals enzymatic specificity in hydroxynitrile glucoside metabolism.

Cyanogenesis, the release of hydrogen cyanide from damaged plant tissues, involves the enzymatic degradation of amino acid-derived cyanogenic glucosides (alpha-hydroxynitrile glucosides) by specific beta-glucosidases. Release of cyanide functions as a defense mechanism against generalist herbivores. We developed a high-throughput screening method and used it to identify cyanogenesis deficient (...

Antifeedant activity of citrus limonoids against Colorado potato beetle: comparison of aglycones and glucosides

The importance of plant allelochemicals in plantherbivore interactions is well known. Although some of these phytochemicals act as phagostimulants for specific herbivores, the majority of allelochemicals examined appear to function primarily in plant defense, acting as insect antifeedants, growth regulators, and/or toxins (Jermy, 1966; Bernays & Chapman, 1977). As such, these chemicals have gre...

Water-soluble constituents of caraway: carvone derivatives and their glucosides.

Nine monoterpenoids related to carvone and seven glucosides were isolated from the water-soluble portion of the methanolic extract of the caraway (fruit of Carum carvi L.), and their structures were clarified by spectral investigation. Among them, eight monoterpenoids and six glucosides were new.
